The mystery of who will have the honor (and pressure) of following up the Oscar winning smash hit theme song from Skyfall for the next James Bond film has been solved. UK pop singer Sam Smith will be the first British male solo artist to perform a Bond theme since 1965 when the track Writing’s On the Wall is released on September 25 from Spectre.
If anyone can score a soaring vocal track like Adele did on Skyfall, it is Smith. The multiple Grammy award winner has been long rumored to be the artist to get the nod to pen (with co-writer Jimmy Napes) and record the 007 theme song, but rumors also had Ellie Goulding and others rumored to be granted the honor of recording the 24th theme song to the iconic spy series.
Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, the producers of Spectre, said, “Sam and Jimmy have written the most inspirational song for Spectre and with Sam’s extraordinary vocal performance, Writing’s On The Wall will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time.”
Smith added, “This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”
