Ant-Man won the weekend box office, beating back a huge challenge from those little yellow evildoers, the Minions. Although the latest character from Marvel to get the big screen treatment won the weekend frame, it was with the second lowest total in the comic book studio’s history.
Ant-Man scored a $58 million opening in its first week of release. Marvel had higher hopes for a new franchise from its smallest hero, but it should still be quite pleased that one of the lesser known superheroes from its canon still made history with the film’s twelfth straight number one film.
Last week’s box office champ, Minions, got knocked off its top perch for a second place finish and $50.2 million — which brings its total to $216.6 million.
Third place belonged to the Amy Schumer written and starring comedy from director Judd Apatow, Trainwreck. It scored an impressive first week debut of $30.2 million that should solidify Schumer’s title as the current “It-Girl” of the moment.
Fourth found Inside Out, Pixar’s latest, with $11.7 million. And closing out the top five was Jurassic World with $11.4 million. With that, Jurassic World has now banked $611 million in domestic box office alone.
