Minions Makes 115 Million: Second Highest Animated Debut Ever!

Minions winning the box office this past weekend was hardly a surprise. What did make headlines was that the Despicable Me spin-off arrived on screens and scored the second highest opening weekend of any animated movie in history. Shrek the Third banked $121.6 million back in 2007, and Minions, this past weekend, earned $115.2 million.

That was more than enough to dethrone the previous week’s winner, also an animated movie — Inside Out. In fact, the Pixar film’s battle of the box office standings with Jurassic World continued.

Last weekend, Inside Out edged out Jurassic World to win the box office. This week, it switched places yet again with the Chris Pratt-starring adventure. Jurassic World took second place with $18.1 million and Inside Out snatched third place with $17.1 million. Now Jurassic World has made a whopping $590.6 million and Inside Out is also doing pretty well with a total box office of $283.6 million.

Fourth belonged to Terminator: Genisys. The return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to the role that made him a star added another $13.7 million to its haul, bringing its total cume to $68.7 million.

Closing out the top five was a debut this week, the found-footage horror film The Gallows. The Blumhouse production scared up $10 million in its debut frame.
